How do they walk? What about their style of dress?) In what sort of world does your story take place? What drapes or curtains hang in the back bedroom?

How do they feel when you run your hand down them? What does the room smell like when the door is flung open? This approach not only helps you to develop the necessary depth of information, but also (because they are stored in the same file as your story) keeps the information to hand. This means that you get consistency, and also a growing and
reliable repository of new ideas.

You do not have to start at the beginning and keep going until you reach the end, so you can develop characters as they occur to you and build rich scenes whenever such detail comes to your mind.
